The Hot Club

We were talking about golf. Fleet Feet Pete said he played military golf – left, right, left, right. Mr. D. reminded me that I was one of the worst caddies ever. My short stint as a caddy lasted only 9 holes because I failed to follow the track of the golfer’s ball. The Fleet One also said he had a ‘giraffe’ golf shot. High and it stinks. Poli Sci Steve told me to read The Creature From Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin. It’s about the Federal Reserve. Wikipedia reveals that Mr. Griffin, a child actor, has also done documentaries. Griffin has also been a John Birch member and officer much of his life. Mike Module, a Pawtucket native like myself, was talking about growing up around Slater Park where they once had ‘Monkey Island’. Mike M thinks we need to have a song about it. Monkeys in Pawtucket. Ernie and Alexander the Great and I were talking about Dire Straits. I mentioned seeing them at the Leroy Theater in Pawtucket in their heyday – Sultans of Swing. Ernie thought it was late ’70’s. Alex thought early ’80’s. It was 1978 after a web check. Scarlet, the Hot Club bartender, is in a band called Lolita Black. I asked her what kind of music they played and she said, “Rock n’ Roll.” Charlie Clancy told me something about Teddy Ball game that I did not know. He said Ted Williams did not play the last three games of the 1960 season, games played in NY against the Yankees with sellout crowds hoping to see the final games of the Splendid Splinter’s career. Williams had hit a homerun in his last at bat in Fenway (against Jack Fisher). He didn’t travel to New York. A Zine moment. A Charlie moment. LAST WEEK’S QUIZ ANSWER If you looked at my E-MAIL, you can see that there were some varied responses to my question asking for two bands whose names had strong sexual connotations. The bands I was looking for – Steely Dan and 10 CC. Steely Dan is the name of a strap-on dildo in William Burrough’s Naked Lunch. 10 CC was supposed to be more than the normal amount of semen in male ejaculate (3 CC), to show their prowess (Jonathan King differs). THIS WEEK’S QUIZ This couple sang back up on the most played rock ‘n’ roll song of the 20th century. So give me the name of the song and the couple.

RUNNING THE BASES, THEN ICING DOWN MAY 21, 2013 Nice to see the Red Sox rebound from losing 3 of 4 to the Twins (even Minnesotan Dave Knudson was surprised). All it took was a road trip to revive the Red Sox. Coming back against the Rays in the 9th inning against Fernando “I’ll wear my hat crooked if I want to” Rodney was one of those defining moments that can last all season. And it was the struggling Will Middlebrooks, hitting .208 at the time, who came through with the bases clearing double. And versus the Twins, Middlebrooks got down a crucial bunt that allowed the go ahead run (and game winner) to reach 3rd where he eventually scored on Johnny Gomes’ sac fly. It might spark Middlebrooks who can carry a team. The little things. This gang of ‘good but not greats’ seems to be starting to have some fun. The outfield defense with Victorino in RF has been very good. It will be excellent when Jackie Bradley, Jr. returns. Imagine - 3 CFs manning the OF. Victorino had a sensational catch vs. the Rays, almost made another on a foul ball and then made a great running catch – all in the same inning. Defense will win you some games. When Pedey gets a homerun that clanks off an outfielder’s glove (thank you Josh Willingham), you know things are going well for the Sox. The Laser Show is heating up. Lackey actually won a game (and pitched well). Dempster should have won a game but couldn’t go 5. Now if the Red Sox can get 5th starter Felix Doubront to pick up the pace, this team might be something. Allen Webster is in the wings and on Sunday beat Gerrit Cole, Pittsburgh’s top pitching prospect. Victoria and I saw Jackie Bradley Jr. and the Portland Seadogs best Cole last year. Let’s see how the Red Sox close out May (CWS, CLE, PHI) when they end it with 3 in NY (5/31-6/2). An all effort team that may find new ways to win. I’m watching. The Bruins are also very watchable as they lead NY 2 games to nil. Henrik Lundqvist gives up 5 goals once in a blue moon (last - 2011). To be fair, Lundqvist may have a bum shoulder. We don’t care. Zombie Bruins. Munch a bunch of Rangers. If NY loses at home in Game #3 Tuesday, the Rangers will be on life support with Zombies in the room. The most amazing element in the Bruins’ success so far has been the play of the 3 young defensemen - Dougie Hamilton, Torey Krug and Matt Bartkowski, the latter two call ups from Providence. Krug has a goal in each of his first two career playoff games. Only 3 other Bruins have ever done that. The last was Tyler Seguin in 2011. And Krug plays D! Tuukka Rask has been sensational at times, and always steady. We want the Cup! PAWSOX Just back from a noontime PawSox game in which they edged Indianapolis 9-8. This game had a little of everything. Jose Iglesias made his debut at 3B. In warm ups he threw one over the 1B’s head. In the game, the first ball hit to him was a smash on which he made a diving grab but then bounced the ball to 1B Drew Sutton who misplayed the one hopper. Sutton doesn’t usually play 1B. After that Iglesias was solid on a couple plays. This was a game that Indy catcher Tony Sanchez won’t forget soon. With the PawSox behind 3-2 and runners on 1st and 3rd, Sanchez tried to pick off the runner at 1B and threw it into RF, allowing the tying run to score and the other man to move to 3B. When the batter swung and missed strike 3, Sanchez had to fire to 1B for the out and he pulled his 1B off the bag allowing the go ahead run to score. In a later inning, Sanchez again tried to pick off the runner at 1B and again threw it into RF. That’s right – a trifecta of errors! The PawSox also scored 2 runners from 3rd on what were ruled wild pitches. 9 runs on 6 hits for the PawSox and 4 errors on Indy. On the positive side for Indy catcher Tony Sanchez, offensively he was 2 for 2 with 2 walks and a 2-run homer. After the PawSox took the lead (on his errors), Sanchez led off and was thrown out at 2B trying to stretch a single into a double. Pedro Beato, the winning pitcher, was ejected by the home plate umpire in the 7th when he threw up and in on Indy’s Josh Harrison. Very strange since there had been no prior incidents, and no warnings. The 80-degree heat must have gotten to home plate umpire Will Little, who also tossed manager Gary DiSarcina after Beato was tossed, and Brandon Snyder. Indy (the Pirates AAA team) has OF Jerry Sands and IF Ivan DeJesus, players obtained by Boston in the LA trade, and then sent to Pittsburgh (with Mark Melancon) for Joel Hanrahan. Sands came intro the 4-game series with no homers, but hit 3 against Pawtucket and barely missed a 4th to end the 9-8 game. E-MAIL Last week’s quiz: Steely Dan for one, 10cc for the other. Chuck ‘D’ Computer Chuck, correct-o-mundo. I should have known that you would be knowledgeable about this subject. - Z Rock & Roll & Sex; my three favorite subjects! Reminds me of something that Steven Tyler once said when asked what he loves most about being a rock star; "It's all about the three m's," he said, "money, music and mmmmmmmm, pussy!" Chuck Steely Dan, AC DC, Sex Pistols, Pearl Jam. To name a few. The Wizard Jim: Sex Pistols and Butthole Surfers come to mind. Also, the David Lee Roth Album title "Eat 'em and Smile" and Van Halen's answer "OU812" for album titles. Andrew "Left Coast" Wright Hi Jim - Great Bruins edition of the 'Zine! Re: new quiz: Wow. I can think of three - FUGS, Sex Pistols, and (Russian) Pussy Riot. There's gotta be more, but certainly I would never think of them! Buff Steve Sex Pistols Erica K Thanks to everyone for their responses. I was looking for names that had sexual connotations so the Sex Pistols and Pussy Riot are too overt. - Z On the Bruins’ comeback down 4-1 in the 3rd period of the 7th game vs. Toronto: I was at work and was running in and out of the laboratory's back door and into the E.R.'s waiting room where they have a T.V. up on the wall. Caught glimpses of the game: 2-1 first & second periods...work...back out....third period 4-1, Toronto!!! Shit, I said, I'm gonna grab my lunch and stay out here until somebody drags me back in. Work!!! 4-2 about midway in the third!!...Work!!! Back out again!! Boston coming on and Toronto is LAYING BACK AND TRYING TO COCOON AROUND REIMER. What???? Bill LaPlante (dad) quote: "You can't win by playing defensive hockey!" He drilled that into me when the league expanded in the 60's and all those less skilled teams adopted that kind of strategy. Well, Toronto gave it away as far as I could tell; I think that the coaches screwed up. No way that Boston should have been allowed to move into the zone unopposed by a forecheck or mid-ice challenge. Reimer was hung out to dry. I hate that f**king Chara; Norris trophy my ass. Still Boston's passion won them the game at the Garden and they deserved it. I'm kinda rooting for Ottawa in the East (seeing as how they beat my Canadiens) and San Jose in the West. Probably won't happen, but looking for an underdog to make it interesting. Bill LaPlante Jimbo, one huge comeback. I actually turned it off at 4-1 and was watching something else. From out of nowhere something told me they were going to win and if I missed it I would regret it forever. Good call by the zombies that whispered in my ear. Actually the game, up to that point, was poorly played by the Bruins, they didn't seem to have any spark. You are absolutely correct - playoff hockey is the best, none of the stupid, so-called fighting, just playing the game. Let's face it, 2 grown men with more equipment on than a linebacker complete with facemasks aren't much of a fight. It’s really to put the fannies in the seats. Go Braves! Sec 8 Ted
